If you’re planning a trip or simply curious about the Southern Hemisphere, you might be surprised to learn that summer in Australia does not fall in June, July, and August. Instead, the Australian summer is the opposite of a North American or European summer.
Summer in Australia officially runs from December 1 to February 28 (or 29) . However, the astronomical summer (based on the solstice) is from approximately December 21 to March 20 . Why Is Australia’s Summer Different? The key lies in the Earth's tilt. Because Australia is located in the Southern Hemisphere , its seasons are reversed compared to the Northern Hemisphere. When the North Pole is tilted away from the sun (creating winter in the USA and Europe), the South Pole is tilted toward the sun—bringing long, sunny days and warm weather to Australia.
