She placed the note in Aris’s box, then went to the kitchen and brewed tea for two.
Elena smiled. It was a small movement, almost invisible. But it was the first smile she had allowed herself in eleven years.
“You don’t have to speak it aloud,” Elena said. Her voice was rough from disuse, but clear. “I already heard it.” prosis
“When we were seventeen—the night of the summer festival—you remember how we snuck into the old mill?”
Elena stepped aside. The fire was low. She added two logs. She placed the note in Aris’s box, then
Elena remembered. The smell of wet grain. The broken ladder to the loft. The boy named Theo who had kissed Elena on the cheek and then disappeared into the dark.
They live in the space between people.
