Watching the broadcast version of Season 04 (the infamous "Joe Mangel arrives" season) back-to-back with this workprint is like peering into an alternate universe. In the official version, Des Clarke (Paul Keane) leaves Ramsay Street quietly to care for his mother. It was a bit sudden, but polite. In the workprint? It’s brutal. An entire B-plot was cut involving Des falling into serious debt after buying the Robinson house. There’s a scene where he stares at a bottle of sleeping pills for a full 40 seconds—no music, just the hum of a refrigerator. It’s incredibly dark for 4:30 PM soap opera.
