After twenty minutes, her eyes opened. She looked at him without surprise.

She reached out a thin hand. He took it. Her fingers were cold. And then, for the first time in eleven years, he did something that was not in any of his textbooks: he remembered. “I should have never stopped
“The present state required it,” he said. Then winced. Even now, he couldn’t help himself.
But on this particular Tuesday, a letter arrived. It was not an email or a text. It was a thick, cream-colored envelope, addressed in a looping, unsteady hand. He sliced it open with a letter opener shaped like a silver die (a gift from a long-ago PhD student).
