In response, the government, led by the Election Commission (EC), undertook the ambitious project of issuing National Identity Cards. Today, the NID is arguably the most critical non-biological document for a Bangladeshi citizen. This paper argues that while the NID system has dramatically reduced identity fraud and enabled digital governance, it has also created new vulnerabilities regarding data privacy and access equity. 2.
