Abstract The Fn (Function) key on HP laptops provides access to dual-purpose keys (e.g., volume, brightness, airplane mode). However, many users encounter scenarios where the Fn key is disabled by default, or toggled into an unexpected mode (e.g., F1-F12 act as media keys without pressing Fn). This paper outlines three primary methods to enable or reconfigure the Fn key on modern HP laptops: keyboard shortcuts, BIOS/UEFI settings, and HP Software solutions. 1. Introduction HP laptops typically ship with a default configuration where the top row keys (F1–F12) perform system actions (e.g., mute, screen brightness) without requiring the Fn key. To use standard F1–F12 functions (e.g., F5 for refresh, F11 for full screen), the user must press Fn + that key . This is referred to as "Action Keys Mode" (enabled by default).
