Modern serials (post-2005) are decoded to show the exact day of the year and the instrument’s number in that day’s production. For example, “12345678” might read: built May 4th, 2022, 15th guitar that day. That’s a level of detail collectors love. The Bad & The Ugly: Major Limitations 1. Huge gaps in vintage coverage (pre-1977) This is the biggest disappointment. Gibson’s own records for 1950s and 1960s guitars are incomplete.
