Marco laughed nervously. It was just an AC. He decided to do what any reasonable person would do: he flipped the circuit breaker. He waited ten minutes, heart pounding in the oppressive heat. He flipped it back on.
Marco ran. He burst out his front door into the sweltering night, gasping. He didn't look back. But as he stood on the sidewalk, he noticed the windows of his neighbors’ apartments. One by one, their AC units were shutting off. And one by one, red double zeros began to glow in the dark like a constellation of watching eyes.

The unit clicked again. But this time, the sound wasn’t mechanical. It was wet. A soft, percussive tap from inside the wall, followed by another, closer. Marco backed away. The cold that now seeped from the vent wasn't the cold of refrigerant. It was the cold of a basement that has never seen light. The cold of something exhaling for the first time in a very long while.
