Elara looked down at her hands. They were still her hands: chipped nail polish, a papercut from this morning’s filing. But the map was gone. In its place, a small silver thread looped around her wrist, vibrating like a plucked harp string.
“Where am I?” Elara whispered.
Then the candle went out.
“What is this?” she asked.
Behind her, in a London flat, the blue candle flickered. And on the kitchen table, the map had changed. Where once it showed only the known lands of Earthsea, now a new island had appeared—tiny, unnamed, and trembling at the edge of the Reaches. earthsea books
