Abstract This paper examines the rise of “Big Brunette” (BB) fashion and style content as a distinct subgenre within digital lifestyle media. Defined by dark-haired, often fuller-figured or tall-framed influencers, BB content challenges both the blonde-centric beauty standards of traditional media and the monolithic “thin, white, and fair” archetype. Through a mixed-methods analysis of Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube content from 2019–2025, this study identifies three core BB aesthetics: Dark Feminine Glamour , Effortless Intellectual , and Boho-Edgy Hybrid . Findings indicate that BB content generates higher engagement rates on dark, high-contrast color palettes (burgundy, emerald, charcoal) and prioritizes textural storytelling (leather, silk, chunky knits). The paper concludes that “Big Brunette” is not merely a hair-color descriptor but a semiotic marker for authority, mystery, and body-positive luxury. 1. Introduction Historically, fashion media has privileged the “All-American Blonde” (e.g., Marilyn Monroe, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy) as the default aspirational figure. However, the past decade has seen the emergence of a counter-archetype: the Big Brunette . This term, popularized by digital stylists like @thebigbrunette (Sophia Roe) and referenced in Vogue Business (2023), describes women with naturally dark or deeply dyed brown hair who use high-contrast, often dramatic styling to create a signature visual identity.
