When Zipacna is taken for slavery, Jaguar Paw must do the unthinkable: return to the ruins of the great city, now a ghost-filled wasteland, and find a forgotten weapon hidden beneath the sacrificial pyramid—a weapon that could turn the tide. Along the way, he reluctantly allies with a young woman from a rival tribe, a captured African translator, and a disillusioned Mayan priest who now worships the cross.
